Bio for Coach Thomas Joost
During the past eleven years Thomas Joost has coached (head and assistant) 25 girls basketball teams at the Vienna house, summer league, CYO, county and AAU levels. Coach Joost believes that basketball is a wonderful game that teaches success through preparation and teamwork.

Coach Joost teaches that for each player the game of basketball can be broken-down into three elements: athletic ability, basketball skills and basketball acumen. He believes that all good basketball players do not share the same mix of those 3 components; strength in one facet can offset deficits in other facets.

In practice Coach Joost focuses on developing basketball skills and concepts (the “why” behind the plays and situations). He expects players to attend practice regularly, ready to learn in his “classroom”. Although he likes players to enjoy practices, he demands their attention; the main enjoyment for the players will be reaping the fruits of their hard work during the weekend tournaments.  During practice the players will hear him preach “Practice doesn’t make perfect; Perfect practice makes perfect”, and “Spectacular results in a game are the result of unspectacular preparation in the gym”, and “You can’t expect to do it in a game unless you do it in practice first.”

Defensively, Coach Joost is a man-to-man first coach. However, he will play a trapping zone defense in certain situations.  Offensively, he tries to keep it simple with a motion offense and some isolation plays.  He likes to score off defensive pressure to reduce the tendency of getting bogged down in a half court game.

With the investment of time and money that each family makes Coach Joost will attempt to provide significant playing time to each player; however, he does not guarantee equal playing in any particular game, nor over the course of the season. Typically, he attempts to get all players into the game in the first half and the beginning of the second half. He will play the best available players to finish a close game (i.e. go for the win). “Best available” is based on what he sees in practice and that particular game (i.e. who might be “hot”). With as many as 13 players on the roster, he tries to integrate playing time over the entire 4 games during each weekend tournament.

While it is expected that players attend practices and games on a priority “best effort” basis, Coach Joost understands that at times participation will not be possible. With the pressure of carting multiple kids around to several activities, the logistics alone can make things quite stressful for parents and players.  He knows that some of the girls are playing other sports.  He wants to ensure that athletics is in its proper place: Faith, family, school all come before sports.

Coach Joost’s goal is that each girl will end the season a better player than when she started and learn a life lesson or two about friendship, and the value of preparation and teamwork that sports is so good at teaching.
